Wilton Manors Crime Rate Decreases and City Commissioners Urge for Gun Control

Wilton Manors, FL (July 28, 2016) – In comparison to 2014, the City of Wilton Manors’ overall crime rate dropped 14.7 percent in 2015, according to the 2015 annual report released by the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) of Broward County. The data is calculated based on a comparison of population and the number of crimes.

“We must be reminded that this accomplishment is the result of not just the diligent work of the Wilton Manors Police Department, but also our partnership with our vigilant community,” said Chief of Police Paul O’Connell.

This new crime data comes during a tumultuous time as occurrences of tragic violent acts increase across the state, nation and the world.

“I want to thank the residents of Wilton Manors for their support, as well as the steadfast commitment of the Wilton Manors Police Department for striving to keep our City safe,” said Mayor Gary Resnick.

To advocate further for public safety, on June 28, 2016, City Commissioners unanimously passed Resolution 2016-55, brought forth by City Commissioner Justin S. Flippen. Resolution 2016-55 calls upon federal and state legislators to enact gun control legislation to prevent mass shootings and large scale human loss of life and suffering from mass shootings in America.

“This decision is about protecting our residents’ safety and welfare as we advocate for stricter gun control,” said Commissioner Flippen. “Public safety in our community and those we travel to, partner with, and do business in remains a top priority. Together we can, should, and must work collaboratively to better ensure a safer society.”
